Krillion Online: an independent deep-sea word game

Seven timed prompts. Uncommon answers. A little submarine heading into the great blue. Each voyage mixes two questions from your chosen world with five general-knowledge prompts: geography, science, food, nature, film, music, sport, wordplay and more. Type one answer within 25 seconds and chase your own best score.

Answer all seven prompts correctly in one dive to reach the hadal trench and unlock STARLING, the original pixel space adventure. Then choose either world before your next voyage. Both themes are free, with no account or download required.

How to play the deep-sea word game

  1. Select Begin the dive to start at the surface with a newly drawn set.
  2. Read each prompt and type one answer within 25 seconds.
  3. Press Enter or select Dive. If your answer is not recognized, try another before the timer expires.
  4. Each correct answer takes your sub to the next destination. Pass or a timeout earns zero points and leaves it in place.
  5. Get all seven prompts correct in one dive to reach the final destination and unlock the space theme.

A prompt might ask for something a diver wears, a chemical element, a musical instrument or a film from a named collection. Read the exact category before choosing an answer.

How the word game is scored

Accepted answers have preset rarity values. Less familiar entries can earn more points. Scores are authored game values, not live player statistics. Only answers and explicit aliases in each prompt’s curated list receive points. The lists may not include every valid answer.

Every accepted answer advances one destination, regardless of its score. Seven correct answers complete a voyage; a high score alone does not unlock space. Your deepest destination and result reflect the answers you actually got right.

Deep-sea scores and STARLING flight scores are saved separately on this browser. Your previous STARLING best score is preserved. Theme choices and unlocks do not sync across devices; clearing site data removes them. If browser storage is blocked, progress lasts for the current visit.

From the sea to the stars

The deep-sea route passes the surface, a 30-metre coral reef, the 180-metre shelf edge, twilight and midnight waters, 2,500-metre hydrothermal vents, a whale fall on the 4,500-metre abyssal plain and the hadal trench. Each destination has its own habitat: reef fish, a rocky shelf, midwater siphonophores, giant squid, vent communities, whale bones and sedimented trench walls. These are selected ocean habitats, arranged as a game journey rather than one literal dive site.

Completing the dive unlocks the existing STARLING artwork: Earth’s launch complex, atmosphere, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, solar system, Milky Way and cosmic horizon. Its question sets combine space discoveries with general knowledge, while the original rocket animations are preserved.

  • Theme switching: choose Deep Sea or unlocked STARLING before a run or after its result. Finish the current voyage before switching.
  • Keyboard and touch: type an answer, press Enter or use the on-screen controls.
  • Optional sound: enable SND for synthesized ambience and effects.
  • Reduced motion: the game follows your device’s reduced-motion preference.

Frequently asked questions

How do I unlock STARLING?

Get all seven deep-sea answers correct in a single dive. A passed or timed-out prompt means that dive does not unlock space. You can retry as often as you like. Once unlocked, select Explore the stars on the result, or STARLING in the theme switcher.

Can I return to the deep-sea theme?

Yes. After unlocking space, both themes remain available in this browser. Choose Deep Sea before the next voyage. Changing themes does not erase your best scores.

How to play STARLING after unlocking it?

Select STARLING, then Start the countdown. Each run draws two space questions and five general-knowledge prompts, with 25 seconds each. Enter or Boost submits an answer; Pass skips it. All seven correct answers reach the cosmic horizon.

Can I play Krillion Unlimited practice here?

You can replay this independent Krillion-style word game as often as you like. Each voyage draws seven different prompts from our 102-question catalogue. General questions and each theme’s questions use separate shuffled queues, so a queue is dealt before it is reshuffled. The game tries to mix categories and avoid the previous run’s prompts; category variety can relax near the end of a queue. Your browser remembers the remaining questions when storage is available. This is not the original Krillion daily puzzle or its answer archive.

Where do the answers come from?

Our independent catalogue combines source-defined factual sets and curated category lists. It includes country names, chemical elements, all 88 constellations, films, sports teams and many everyday topics. Common names, explicit aliases, accents and punctuation variants are supported. Curated lists can still omit valid answers. View sources and data licences.

Is this the official Krillion game?

No. This is an independent rare-answer word game with its own question lists, preset scoring and original artwork. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original Krillion and does not use its question service. Play the original at krillion.io.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Tap the answer field to type, then use Dive or Boost, or Pass. The game needs JavaScript and a modern browser.

Where are my unlocks and scores saved?

They stay in local storage in this browser. They do not sync across devices, and clearing site data removes them. Existing STARLING records are kept separately from deep-sea records. If storage is unavailable, an on-screen message explains that progress is temporary.

Question sources & data licences

Questions are independently maintained. Country-derived sets use mledoze/countries under ODbL 1.0. Periodic-table-derived sets use Bowserinator’s data under CC BY-SA 3.0. Constellation names follow NASA StarChild. Film, play, park and team-name sets were checked against their publishers’ public lists. No original Krillion question service is used.
